Tracking Numbers

Tracking Numbers are ultimately used to match up your family pictures with the family members listed on your completed Tree Form.

So, after printing out the Tree Forms and writing out your family tree structure on the blank Tree Form, the next step is to assign a unique tracking number to each family member (more specifically, each "line item") on the Form (see Fig. 3).

What Exactly Are Tracking Numbers?

Simply put, a Tracking Number is a series of birth-order numbers (1st born = 01; 2nd born = 02; etc.) where each generation adds a new birth-order number onto the right-hand-side of the string:

  • (01) = 1st child of Starting Family
  • (01-01) = 1st child of 1st child of SF
  • (01-02) = 2nd child of 1st child of SF
  • (01-02-01) = 1st child of 2nd child of 1st child of SF
  • (01-02-01-01) = 1st child of 1st child of 2nd child of 1st child of SF
  • (02) = 2nd child of Starting Family
  • (02-01) = 1st child of 2nd child of SF

Note:   The Column Number in which a family member resides and the number of Birth-Order Numbers in their Tracking Number should always be equal.

(i.e. Sara Smith is in Column "4" and her Tracking Number contains "4" Birth-Order Numbers (01-02-01-01).
